Butterfly Pavilion and Insect Center, Westminster, Colorado

Seeing all of these butterflies is really inspiring
There are more than 1,200 that are free-flying

Butterfly Pavilion is the zoo of small wonders and BUIG experiences! We combine science, education, and nature with hands-on fun to teach visitors about invertebrates and conservation. The invertebrate zoo offers five interactive exhibits and home to over 5,000 animals,  including a 7,000-square-foot tropical rainforest filled with 1,200 free-flying butterflies.

When you enter Butterfly Pavilion you will first Venture through the desert, grasslands, and the rainforest of our Crawl-A-See-Em discovering spiders, cockroaches, beetles, scorpions, centipedes, and bees.. OH MY! Along the way you will embark on an adventure to the Realm of Rosie, our famous tarantula. Here, If you dare, the brave will hold Rosie.

Once you part with our favorite spider, Rosie, you will leave the desert and enter the Ocean. Step into Waters edge to be immersed in an underwater world full of sea creatures. This is a journey from saltwater to fresh water where you meet invertebrates who make these areas their homes. Sea stars, crabs, shrimp, octopuses, lobsters are just a few of the invertebrates you will meet. While traveling through water’s edge you will have the chance to touch a starfish and a horse shoe crab!

You will now exit the water and have the chance to dry off in our tropical  rainforest where 1,600 butterflies rule the sky, Wings of the Tropics. Here you will meet butterflies, moths, turtles, tortoises, and Larry Noodles, our bird. In Wings of the Tropics you will see butterflies exiting their chrysalises, watch new butterflies be released, and you will be able to see them up close and personal. If you’re lucky enough.. they might just land on you!

Once you leave the rainforest you will enter into our band new exhibit, Invertebrate World! Here you will immerse yourself in an explosion of invertebrate diversity when gazing upon our carnivore tower and then get dirty digging for some of our animal residents in the dug out!

The adventure it not over just yet… You will now enter into our last exhibit Butterfly Pavilion’s Garden and Nature Trail. Here you will be able to fish for crawdads, find native butterflies and bees enjoying our garden, and explore the grasslands Colorado while hiking around our nature trail.

Butterfly Pavilion showcases small wonders with BIG roles. The majority of our residents may be small but they make up such an important part of our world. Did you know that invertebrates make up 97% pf all animal species on the planet! Our zoo is designed to showcase the diversity of these small wonders, their habitats, and the BIG role they play in ensuring the health of our environment. You will leave with a whole new appreciation for all of the little critters surrounding you!
